Setting up NBRemote for first use

by Jonny Bergdahl | Oct 25, 2011
Before we start
In order to use NBRemote, you need to have a registered version of Newsbin Pro running on a computer connected to your local network. You will also need to have a WI-FI connection to the local network on your iPhone/iPad.

Newsbin Pro settings

To set up Newsbin Pro for remote control, go to Options - Options in the menu. Select Remote Control in the dialog.

Check the Enable Remote Control check and add a password of your liking in the Password textbox. Leave the rest of the settings as is and click OK.

Before you can setup NBRemote, you need to get the IP address of the computer running Newsbin Pro. If you are not sure how to find that, you can follow the instructions in this video: http://www.videojug.com/film/how-to-find-your-ip-address-in-windows. The IP address is something that looks like 192.168.0.100.

You will also need your Newsbin Pro serial number. This can be found by selecting Help - About Newsbin Pro in the menu.

Start NBRemote. The first time it runs, it will display the following message.

Enter the following:
  • Description: A name for this connection.
  • Server address: The IP address (or name) of the computer running Newsbin Pro.
  • Server port: The TCP port set in the options of Newsbin Pro, if you didn't change it in Newsbin Pro, just leave it as 118.
  • Serial number: The serial number of Newsbin Pro.
  • Password: The password you entered in Newsbin Pro.
Select Test connection. If all is well, you should see the message "Connected successfully" after a few seconds. I you instead receive the message "The connection timeout has expired" you need to check the server address. If you receive the message "Authentication required" you need to check that you entered the serial number and password correctly.

Select the back button. You may now take the time of setting up your filters, and select the NBRemote skin to use. Select Done in the upper right corner when done.

Select Servers in the left upper corner.

Troubleshooting
If you are unable to connect to your computer, check the following.

Error message "The connection timeout has expired"

This means NBRemote has tried to connect to your computer, but failed to connect.
  • Check that your device is connected to the local WiFi network.
  • If you run a firewall on your computer, disable it and try again.
  • If you run antivirus software on your computer, disable it and try again.
Error message "Connect failed"

This means NBRemote has tried to connect to your computer, but the computer it connected to refused the connection.
  • Check that Newsbin is running on your computer
  • Check that the IP address entered in NBremote matches the IP address of the computer.
  • Check that your device is connected to the local WiFi network.
Error message "Authentication required"

This means NBRemote has connected to your computer, but wasn't allowed due to a logon problem.
  • Check the serial number and password
Advanced settings
If you want to use NBRemote from outside of your local network, you need to setup port forwarding in your internet router. How this is done depends on your router brand and model, so do a search on Google for instructions. If your ISP assigns dynamic IP addresses you might also need to setup dynamic DNS.

For example "D-Link DIR-855 port forward" which among others gives you the following tutorial, http://www.pcwintech.com/port-forwarding-d-link-dir-855-d-link-firmware

You need to set up port forwarding to your local IP address with TCP port 118, just as entered in the NBRemote settings.

To access the server using NBremote from a network outside your home, add a server setting with the external IP address of your router (or it's dynamic DNS name). The other settings should be the same as for the local setting.
